Mendip GC Junior Gliding Centre

  • Our Vision is to help create skilled pilots through great instruction.

  • Our Mission is to put support in place for Junior Pilots at the heart of club activities.

  • Our Purpose is to develop young lives through Gliding.

Mendip Gliding Club is a British Gliding Association accredited Junior Gliding Centre. The aims of the club is to enable and encourage young people to get actively involved in the UK's gliding movement.  Gliding is an outdoors team sport that is available to all levels of ability.

The instruction you will receive as a Junior Member is from a BGA qualified Gliding Instructor who has many years of gliding experience, and many stories to tell.

The training syllabus is highly structured with each flight recorded in your own log book with comments and recommendations from your instructor.  You can see the training information HERE.

Mendip Gliding Club is also a Community Amateur Sports Club (CASC) and we have various schemes to ensure affordability. We would be happy to have a confidential discussion with any junior and their family considering joining the club.  Please contact our Eric Lacey on enquiries@mendipgliding.co.uk to find the ways in which we can help.

As a Junior Gliding Centre we have put in place a number of measures to prevent cost being a barrier to junior’s participation in the sport. As an all-volunteer club it enables us to limit the cost of flying; for example, all instruction is provided free of charge to members.

The minimum age for joining is 12 years old, with a parent or guardian accompanying the child on the airfield.  The accompanying adult will need to join on a social membership due to the requirements of the MGC’s  insurers.

The Junior membership is up to 18 years old, or in full time education.

The youngest you can go solo is 14 years old.

You can make a planned visit to the airfield to have a chat with one of the instructors or committee members which will allow you to see how the club runs and answer all your questions, you may even be able to combine this with a ‘first flight’.
