Mendip Gliding Club is based at Halesland Airfield

The Mendip Hills are a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Halesland sits on the top of the Mendip ridge which runs approximately parallel to airfields main landing strip. The ridge extends, with a few breaks from Crooks Peak near the M5 motorway to beyond the city of Wells. Perhaps the best known feature of the Mendips, about midway between the north west and south east ends of the range of hills, is Cheddar Gorge. This is a few minutes flight from the Halesland launch point and is easily accessible in a westerly wind. The highest point on the Mendips is the television mast near Priddy, north east of Halesland, which is over 900 feet high overlooking the city of Wells with it's famous cathedral.

Heading south from the ridge you’ll reach the Somerset levels with views of Glastonbury Tor and further out to the Quantocks. Looking north you’ll see the Mendip plateau, Bristol Airport and the Severn Estuary. On a good day you’ll spot both Severn Bridges and further north into the Welsh mountains.

Our location is definitely one of the things that makes MGC special, the Mendip ridge allows us to fly even when no thermals are available and the scenery and views are made even more spectacular from 2000 feet up!
